Community Services

Performing public service is a hallmark of the Marr family and a tradition that has been handed down through the generations. The most visible example of the family's community outreach efforts is the founding of the Colonel Daniel Marr Boys & Girls Club of Dorchester, Inc.

Inaugurated in 1971 by Daniel F. Marr, Jr. and Robert L. Marr in memory of their father, Daniel F. Marr, Sr., the Colonel Daniel Marr Boys & Girls Club of Dorchester today provides a wealth of educational, vocational and recreational programming, as well as many other special services, to more than 3,000 boys and girls of the Dorchester community.

The Club's recreational offerings include a wide range of traditional activities like basketball, swimming and hockey, as well as programs for judo, volleyball, kickball, track, gymnastics and weight lifting. Additionally, there is an equestrian club, a cooking club, a chess club and an art club.

In addition to providing individual tutoring and guidance, the educational services available to local youth include reading enhancement, homework help and; college preparation, counseling, assistance and tours.

The Club reaches out to the families of its members and offers them services like counseling, information and referral and a variety of youth development programs. There is a Parents Forum and an Outreach Program. These groups offer solutions to families with very real problems.

In the fall of 1999, The Paul R. McLaughlin Youth Center was opened in response to the needs of a growing population at the Club. With the added space, the Club no longer has to turn away children from membership. The center houses a new teen center with recreational and educational facilities, an expanded day care center, a general programming and multi-purpose room and community room for meetings and gatherings.
